Who am I?

Hi I’m Calvin. I live in St. Catharines, Ontario, with my beautiful fiancee. I work as a Pharmacist at the hospital. When I’m not counting pills to pay the bills, I’m working on this new build development project.

How did I get started in real estate?

In 2017, my fiancee and I purchased what we thought would have been our family home. We were renting an apartment at the time in Burlington and if you remember the housing market in 2017, it was red hot in beginning of the year and then cooled off with the Ontario Fair Housing Plan in April. Not knowing much about housing, we purchased at the heat of the sizzling market in January 2017 and paid $45,000 over the asking price. Yikes! We got extremely emotional during the bidding wars we lost and now feeling the full pressure of a massive mortgage.

“Pressure is a word that is misused in our vocabulary. When you start thinking of pressure, it's because you've started to think of failure.” - Tommy Lasorda.

A few months later, my fiancee started doing some budgeting and realized we’d be quite stretched with the new house we purchased. She was also quite influenced by the Rich Dad, Poor Dad movement and propelled her to think outside of the pressure and opportunistically what we can do. At the time, we didn’t have any kids yet so it was a place we didn’t need at the moment. My fiancee suggested we rented it out and although at first I was hesitant, I did see her rationale and decided to rent it out. As you can tell by now, she really is the brains between the 2 of us!

Over the next year since we rented out our first property, we subsequently completed various real estate ventures, including: a flip, dealing with leaky basement, frozen pipes, garage renovation, laundry room addition, evictions, dealing with contractors, and so much more!

I didn’t grow up being very handy with renovations and construction; growing up, if our garage door was broken, we’d call somebody. I realize though real estate is not just about construction and being handy and if above all, it begins with your mindset.

I’m hoping to offer both hard and soft skills from this website to help you with your development project; the hard skills like construction/new build and the soft skills like negotiating and working with city planners.

Happy building!
